FURTHER INFORMATION
INFORMED CONSENT
The informed consent process is intended to empower and protect both clients and psychologists. The informed consent process is dynamic, fluid, and ongoing through which consent is obtained both initially and as the professional relationship develops, boundaries are established, and professional rapport is built. Overall, this process entails psychologists providing sufficient relevant information, ensuring that clients understand the information, and that clients voluntarily choose to participate. Informed consent will be documented and placed in the client’s file.
An individual under the age of 18 is presumed to be a minor unless they have been deemed a mature minor. If a psychologist is engaged by a minor’s caregiver(s) to provide services to the minor, then informed consent must be obtained prior to the services being provided. When possible and practical, psychologists should attempt to seek informed consent from all parents/guardians to ensure transparency and objectivity in the delivery of professional services.
